Die Auszeichnung mit 96 von 100 Punkten ist eine herausragende Leistung. Das Degarra-Team freut sich sehr über diese Auszeichnung und wird die hervorragende Arbeit der vergangenen Jahre fortsetzen. Zwei Gold-, drei Silber- und 13 Bronzemedaillen sind das Ergebnis von Winzern und Weinen aus der Gespanschaft Zadar. 20 Proben von insgesamt weltweit 18.093 Weinen wurden zum weltgrößten Wein-Festival 2021 eingesandt.

The award score of 96 out of 100 is an outstanding achievement. The Degarra team is very glad about this award and will continue the good work of the past years. Two gold, three silver and 13 bronze medals are the result of winemakers and wines from Zadar County. 20 samples of 18,093 wines were sent to the 2021 world’s largest festival.
Croatian wines have won in countless awards at the most prominent wine festival in the world. For the first time in 2021, Decanter, in Great Britain a remarkable number of winemakers from Zadar County participated with an organized participation and submitting the wines, with the promised support of Zadar County. Organized and supported by the association of winemakers of Zadar County, winemakers from this area have shown themselves and made their quality in winemaking visible to the world. The biggest ‚Best in Show awards‘, which were shared by as many as 50 this year, were not Croatian wines, and these wines received 97 and 98 out of a possible 100 points. This year no wine had more than 98. This year, 18,093 wine samples were delivered to London from around the world, the most ever.

Decanter has it’s own scoring, and this is why it makes it so special. Decanter also has platinum from 86 to 100 points. Croatia returns with three platinums, namely Bire for Grk 97, Benvenuti for Muscat with 97 points and Zura for Posip with 97 points. Gold requires 95 or 96 points. Of the eight Croatian gold medals with so many points, two are from Zadar County, and we congratulate them. These are Degarra Winery with their Garageist Bili Degarra with 96 points, and Bora Winery with Pošip with 95 points. The owners of Degarra Winery are Dane Šulentić and Mate Pestić, and Bora Winery Zdravko Žuža. Let’s say that the aforementioned award-winning Degarra wine would be a Pošip grape. However, congratulations to Zdravko Žuža. The oenologist Dragana and Dane Šulentić and Mato Pestić might be a surprise whenn participating in the future. However, 25 percent of Croatian gold from Decanter belongs to Zadar County, as never before.

A beneficial event to the country’s small wine industry
POTOMJE, Croatia, Jan 17 (Reuters) – A Croatian red wine will be among the wines served at the events on the Inauguration Day this week in Washington. The winery that produced the wine says: „We hope that the moment in the presidential spotlight, is also a boon to the country’s small wine industry“.
The wine, which sells for about $60-70 per bottle in the United States, is from the Benmosche Family Winery, which produces some 4,000 to 5,000 bottles of Zinfandel and Dingac a year.
Boris Mrgudic, Director of the Benmosche Family Winery, did not have any details about which particular lunch or dinner the wine would be served at during Wednesday’s Inauguration Day, when Democrat Joe Biden will be sworn in as president.
President-elect, Joe Biden, and his vice-president, Kamala Harris, are due to be sworn in on the steps of the Capitol on the 20th of January. The inauguration ceremony will be slightly more modest due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the ceremony will also be available to view virtually. After a tumultuous end to Donald Trump’s presidency, which saw violent demonstrations at the same sight of the upcoming inauguration, Joe Biden is hoping for a calmer period.
Long tradition of wine making
The Mrgudic family has been involved in wine production for 12 generations and went into business with late U.S. insurance executive Robert Benmosche, a great wine lover, after meeting him in the early 2000s.

The new American President and his team will enjoy a touch of Croatia, when the wines from the Pelješac peninsular vineyards are served. The Croatian wine which ‚connects‘ both sides on the Atlantic, for although the vineyards are based in Croatia they are owned by an American family. At Joe Biden’s inauguration the wines Dingač and Zinfande from the Benmosche Family Winery are served. Truly a great promotion for Croatian wines, and indeed the Pelješac wines, as the whole event will be covered of all world’s media.
Passion for Croatian wine made this happen
So how did wines from Croatia end up on the table of the President’s inauguration? The vineyards in question were started by Robert H. Benmosche, the former head of the world’s largest insurance group, AIG, and a former advisor to President Barack Obama. Benmosche, who was a passionate lover of Dalmatian wines, planted the vines in 2006 on the terraced slopes of Dingač. After Benmosche passed away in 2015, but his family continued working on the vineyards. The wine making on Pelješac continued under the watchful eye of the famous winemaker, Marija Mrgudić, who Benmosche refered to as his “boss” when he arrived in Pelješac. In fact, Benmosche fell in love with the area so much that he bought a luxurious sea-front villa in Dubrovnik.
The winery is located on the hilly slopes of the Peljesac peninsula near the popular tourist destination of Dubrovnik.
“This news will certainly contribute to promotion of the Croatian wines which is very important, as Croatia is a small wine producer and still not very competitive on the global markets,” Mrgudic said.

Das Weingut Degarra verwandelt die ehemalige Militärkaserne in ein Haus aus Wein und Köstlichkeiten
Der Name des Weinguts Degarra ist von von der französischen Ausdruck „Vin de Garage“ abgeleitet. Diese sind seit den 80er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts zum Synonym für die kleinen, leidenschaftlichen Produzenten der besten französischen Weine und Weltweine geworden. Genau genau das beschreibt die Vision der Familien Pestić und Šulentić.
Auf den fruchtbaren Feldern von Ravni Kotar, dem kleinen Land, das zwischen dem Stein von Bukovica und der Insel versteckt ist, sind seitdem Weinberge gewachsen. Zwei Familien, Pestić und Šulentić, erkannten das Potential der Region Zadar und beschlossen vor fünf Jahren zusammen ihren Traum zu verwirklichen. Heute spiegelt sich dieser Traum im Weingut Degarra wieder.
Das 2012 gegründete junge Weingut verfügt über 1,8 Hektar eigene Weinberge und 3,6 Hektar Anbaufläche in Konzession. Am Weinanbauort in Ravni Kotar und diesem sehr besonderem Boden werden die Sorten Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah , Plavina , Pošip und Maraština angebaut. Daraus entstehen die Qualitätsweine – Pošip, Bonterra, Rose, Bommary, Primo und Perla. Die kroatische Wein – Geschichte ist sehr außergewöhnlich und in vielen „einfach unglaublichen“ Gegebenheiten spannend erzählt. Darauf kommen wir in diesem Blog noch mehr zum Thema.
Der größte Stolz heißt Bomary
Das Weingut Degarra produziert Weißweine, Roséweine und Rotweine. Ein Schwerpunkt ist anfänglich der Weißwein. Der bisher größte Stolz ist der einzigartige, aromatisierte Wein, mit dem Namen Bomary. Der Wein ist durch die Kombination von 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah) und mit Maraška-Wein entstanden. Der Bomary ist zu einer wahren Delikatesse für Weinliebhaber geworden die diesen subtilen Geschmack bevorzugen.
Degarra Pošip und Rosé
Degarra Pošip ist ein eleganter Wein mit einer unverwechselbaren Frische südländischer Früchte und Holunderblüten. Rosé wird aus den Sorten Plavin und Merlot im Verhältnis 90:10 hergestellt. Es wird gesagt, dass der Rosé ein charmanter Wein mit verführerischen Farben und kristallklarem Glanz ist. Der Geschmack wird von Beerenfrüchten, Himbeeren, Blaubeeren und Preiselbeeren dominiert. Der Rosé erfrischt den Gaumen mit einem langen Nachgeschmack.
Degarra Bonterra
Bei der Verkostung ausgewählter Weine in führenden Restaurants gehört der Qualitäts-Trockenwein Degarra Bonterra regelmäßig zu den am besten bewerteten. Es ist ein nicht gefiltertes Coupage, 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon und 10% Syrah. Dieser delikate Wein wurde bei der jüngsten Paarung von Weinen mit Käse aus Pag in zwei von vier Kategorien an erster Stelle eingestuft .
Degarra – Der erste Zadar Schaumwein nach der traditionellen Methode des Champagner
Das Weingut Degarra würdigt auch den ersten „Zadar – Champagner“. Sogar zwei davon. Primo wird nach der traditionellen Methode, Champagner in der Flaschengärung aus der Rebe Sorte Pošip hergestellt, während der Perla-Rosse-Sekt aus der Rebe Sorte Plavin ebenfalls nach der traditionellen Methode produziert wird.
Degarra Winery – Barrique Hall und Verkostungsort
Bei dem neuen Projekt des Weinguts Degarra wird mit dem besonderen Sekt angestoßen weil es um ein besonderes Vorhaben in Umsetzung geht. Der zukünftige „Hauptsitz“, also die Winery des Weingut Degarra mit einer Barrique-Halle und einem Verkostungsraum befindet sich jetzt in der ehemaligen JNA-Kaserne oberhalb der Zadar-Siedlung Bokanjac neben der Straße nach Ražanac und Pag. Die Winery des Weinguts Degarra ist hier von jahrhundertealten Kiefern umgeben auf einer Fläche von über 10.000 Quadratmetern. Die Winery hat über 350 Quadratmeter und kann mehr als 100 Besucher aufnehmen. Neben Degarra-Weinen und Sekt gibt dies auch ein Ort für weitere Köstlichkeiten wie Olivenöl, Käse, Schinken, Fisch und andere Qualitätsprodukte von Familienbetrieben aus dem Großraum Zadar. Der Prosciutto – Schinken Dalmatiens, sein Name leitet sich von der italienischen Delikatesse ab, wird von dem Bora – Wind getrocknet (Bura). Die kroatische und dalmatinische Küche ist köstlich und bietet eine große Auswahl an Köstlichkeiten.
